Jim Richards co-founded Capstone Consulting with Randy Ott in 1998 to establish a world-class
IT consulting organization founded on integrity and which glorifies God, while also providing
a place where people could apply their faith at work.
Jim currently leads the firm's Strategic IT Consulting practice. In addition to providing
leadership to Capstone, Jim and the SIT practice serve Capstone's customers by helping to
launch and leading major initiatives, developing and enhancing their internal development
processes, managing strategic projects, and advising them on all aspects of the software
development lifecycle.
With 20 years of experience in software design and development, Jim has filled most roles
on software development projects, including architect, abstractionist, application engineer,
project manager, ScrumMaster, GUI developer, business intelligence analyst, and tool smith.
He has had the opportunity to work on and lead successful business intelligence and data
warehouse teams since mid-2000, applying iterative processes and principles to very complex
software development efforts. He has also led a number of
RUP/Agile hybrid teams
to deploy software projects for Capstone’s customers. Jim has a passion for delivering successful
projects with real business value, mentoring people on proven processes, and applying best
practices in customers’ unique environments.
One of the highlights of Jim’s career was the opportunity to work in a
Department of Defense
lab on Command and Control systems, developing cutting-edge prototypes. Other career
highlights include applying OOA&D principles at a large telecommunications company in the
early 1990s and presenting on leveraging RUP on J2EE projects at a
Rational User Conference.
Jim has specific proficiencies in enterprise and application architecture, Agile project/program
management, object-oriented software development technologies, business analysis, requirements
management, and distributed computing. He has significant experience in all phases of the
software development lifecycle, and has managed projects in a number of environments leveraging
many key methodologies - including waterfall, RUP, and Agile techniques. Jim has also mentored
and trained customer staff at all levels in a variety of subject areas including: OOA&D,
Java/J2EE, Corba, C++, RUP, Project Management, Agile, Requirements Analysis, and Architecture.
Jim has a BA in Management Information Systems from
Dordt College
in Sioux Center, IA, and a MS in Computer Science from the
University of Colorado at Denver.
He is married with four children, aged 8 to 21.
Jim is an elder at
Harvest Community Church in Omaha,
and finds fulfillment in being mentored and
mentoring others in their Christian walk. He has a passion for international missions -
specifically in Romania - and ministering to local internationals.
